PMK takes up cudgels against SEZs
Chennai, Apr 30 (UNI) Continuing its opposition against Special Economic Zones, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), a constituent of the DMK-led DPA, today urged the Tamil Nadu Government to reconsider the MoUs signed for setting up two SEZs at Taramani on the IT corridor here.
PMK founder-leader Dr S Ramadoss, in a statement here, said the SEZs were against the industrial policy announced by the State Government and would not benefit the common man in any manner.
These SEZs should be shifted to backward areas like Nanguneri, Tirunelveli, Madurai and Ramanathapuram, he added.
Observing that projects aimed at generating employment and industrial development were welcome, Dr Ramadoss said projects aimed at promoting real estate business in the name of industrial development was not necessary and the State Government should not be a party to it.
It may be recalled that the State Government had signed a MoU with real estate major DLF Limited for setting up an IT and ITeS SEZ at Taramani, involving an investment of Rs 1,500 crore, and another one with the Tata Realty and Infrastructure Limited and Indian Hotels Company Limited for setting up a Rs 3,000 crore SEZ for IT companies.
