One militant eliminated, cop injured in Sopore

Srinagar Apr.30 : Sopore Police have eliminated the self-styled chief of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen in an encounter in which a policeman was also injured.

Police conducted a raid in a residential quarter of Sopore, and a search of the area revealed the presence of a heavily armed militant.

The latter hurled a grenade at the police party and in the encounter that followed he was killed.

The slain militant was identified as Sajad Afghani, the self-styled chief commander of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen.

Afghani was reportedly active in the districts of Kupwara, Bandipore and Baramulla for the last ten years and was involved in number of terrorist actions.

One AK-74 short barrel, four magazines, 150 AK rounds and six grenades were recovered from the dead militant.

In another unrelated incident, police nabbed two Hizbul Mujahideen militants one from Pringroo village in Handwara District and the other from Batamaloo.

The two militants were identified as Javed Ahmad Bhat and Aijaz Ahmad Malik. Weapons and ammunition were also seized from the two.
