Hillary's Himalayan trust to receive humanitarian award

Kathmandu, Apr.28 : The Himalayan Trust will be recognised for four decades of volunteer work improving the lives of Sherpa communities in Nepal, by receiving the Variety International Humanitarian Award at a gala event in Auckland.

The award, to be presented next month, recognises a person or organisation that has made a significant contribution to the welfare of their fellow human beings, stuff.co.nz reports.

The Himalayan Trust, established by Sir Edmund Hillary, epitomised the value of the award , Variety chief executive Lorraine Taylor said.

Since the trust's inception it had been responsible for building and maintaining more than 30 schools, two hospitals, 12 medical clinics, three airfields and many bridges and fresh water pipelines.
