Road caves in forming 12-foot deep pit

Mumbai, Apr 26 (UNI) A major accident was averted with the traffic signal turning red just in time on the Raja Rammohan Roy Road at Charni Road here this afternoon.

The road caved in and formed a 12-foot deep crater immediately after a bus passed over it, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials informed reporters.

The pit was about eight by ten feet wide, the officials said.

However, immediately after the bus passed, the signal turned red and, thus, a major disaster was averted.

The road was immediately sealed by local residents who alerted the police as well as the BMC.

The BMC ward officer, Chandrashekhar Choure, told reporters that the road might have caved in owing to the bursting of an underground sewerage line. The Hydraulic and Sewerage Department officials are probing the cause and the exact reason would be known only later, he added.

A major arterial water supply pipeline, which is linked to the Malabar Hill reservoir, passed where the pit has formed, he added.
