GTB Residents stay away from duty for day

New Delhi, Apr 26 (UNI) Medical services at the Government-run GTB Hospital in east Delhi were affected today as Resident Doctors went on day-long-strike after a colleague was roughed up by a dead patient's family members.

The Resident Doctors stayed away from work the whole day demanding better security arrangements for the staff and improved working conditions after last night's incident.

They also demanded suspension of the security staff responsible for the ''security lapse.'' The Hospital authorities and the representatives of the RDA broke the stalemate at a meeting this evening, promoting the junior doctors to resume work at 1800 hrs.

''We have been demanding better security for a long time but nobody was paying attention... But after last night, things got out of hand. We want better security,'' said RDA president Dr R Sharma.

Hospital Medical Superintendent P C Dikshit said the demands of the doctors have been forwarded to the Government.

''Operations in the hospital have resumed completely,'' he added.

Regarding allegations that three patients died in the hospital due to lack of medical attention, Dr Dikshit denied the charges.

''Our senior doctors were on duty so the question of patients dying in lack of medical attention does not arise. They were already in a critical condition and died because of their ailments,'' he clarified.
