Dalits denied right of passage, tension in Fatehabad village
Fatehabad, Apr 24 (UNI) Tension prevailed in village Baijalpur of this district today after some upper class activists allegedly dug up a 60-year-old brick-lined street and built a wall to deny right of passage to the Dalit community.
The dalit leader met Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO) R P Munjal and threatened to make the BDPO office at Bhuna town their permanent abode if the dismantled street connecting the dalit locality with the rest of the village was not restored immediately.
The local officials, who had initially backed the move saying the street was built on private property, however, swung into action in the afternoon and razed the wall with the help of police after the Dalits threatened exodus from the village.
Later, Munjal, accompanied by the SHO Bhuna Sadhu Ram rushed to the village in the afternoon and razed the wall erected by alleged owner of the land and his accomplices.
The Deputy Commissioner, O P Sheoran, when contacted, said the matter had been resolved and added that the Dalits were earlier apprehensive that their houses, build on encroached land of the street would also be razed.
