Wanted dacoit Mohar Singh shot dead with close aide in encounter

Lucknow, Apr 23 (UNI) In its anti-dacoit operation, Uttar Pradesh police today gunned down wanted dreaded dacoit Mohar Singh Mallah and one of his close confidant and relative Surendra Mallah during an encounter in Etawah district today.

Mohar, who was carrying a bounty of Rs 20,000 on his heady by the UP police, had in February 22 killed one Lalji Kulshestra under Sirsakala police station area of Jalaun district after he refused to pay ransom to the dacoit syndicate.

After the murder, Mohar had left a letter stating that he will kill 44 people like Phoolan devi, as a woman murdered 22 upper caste people.

Additional Director General of Police (ADG)(Law and Order, Crime) Brijlal here said, ''on a tip off police cordoned the gang known as IZ-257 in the police records in a jungle near Tejpura village in Sahso area and after 45 minutes of firing two dacoits were shot dead by police.

''Two double barrel (DBBL) guns, 47 live cartridges and Rs 13,000 cash were recovered from the possession of the outlaws,'' Mr Brijlal said.

As many as 23 cases of murder, kidnapping and other heinous crimes were pending against Mohar.

The gang was active in Etawah, Kanpur dehata and Jalaun districts and in the past it had abducted two people from Amrahat area of Kanpur dehat.
