Municipal bodies protest threats by militants

Imphal, Apr 23 (UNI) The All Manipur Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats Joint Action Committee have decided to tender their resignation to the Chief Minister on April 28 if their demands were not met.

The committee has alleged that militants were extorting huge amount of money from the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) and demanded that this be stopped.

AMMC Secretary O Bimola also said militants have locked the Municipal Council office of Nambol in Bishenpur district and threatened not to open it till the extortion money was paid.

Ms Bimola lamented that the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayats were unable to carry on their duties following such threats.

''We have already started a five-day office closure and pen down strike from yesterday,'' she added.
