Four children die after being administered vaccine

Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, April 23 (UNI) Four infants died after being administered measles vaccine in separate incidents in this district today.

Official sources said seven ten-month-old babies, who were administered the vaccine at a medical camp at the Primary Health Centre in Pennalurpet village, showed symptoms of allergy and were referred to the Tiruvallur District Headquarters Government Hospital.

Three out of the seven kids died. They were identified as Mohana Priya, Pooja and Nandini. The condition of another child Vignesh was stated to be serious.

In another incident, one Lokesh, hailing from Venakatapuram village, fell ill after being administered the vaccine at Poonimangadu PHC near Tiruttani. He was rushed to the Tiruvallur District Headquarters Government Hospital, from where he was shifted to the Egmore Children's Hospital in Chennai. However, he breathed his last.

A team of three doctors from Chennai reached Tiruvallur and was looking into the matter. Based on their report, action would be taken, Tiruvallur District Collector Rajendra Kumar said.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister M R K Pannerselvam rushed to the Tiruvallur Headquarters Government Hospital and consoled the bereaved parents. He directed the district Collector and other officials to speed up the investigation.
