Congress announces third list for Karnataka

{image-Karnataka boopadam_23042008.jpg news.oneindia.in}New Delhi, Apr 23: Former Chief Minister N Dharam Singh, former Deputy Chief Minister M P Prakash and PCC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge are among he 85 candidates whose names were announced by the Congress for the three-phase election to Karnataka state assembly next month.

While Mr Singh would contest the elections from Jevargi, Mr Mallikarjun Kharge has been fielded from Chitapur, an SC constituency. Both the leaders are fighting the elections in the third phase. Mr Prakash, who joined the Congress seven months ago, will contest from Harappanahalli in the second phase of the poll to the 224-member state assembly where President's rule was imposed five months ago following the fall of the first BJP-led government in South India on the issue of power sharing with Janata Dal (S). Former Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde's daughter Mamta Nichani has been fielded from Ramanagaram to take on JD(S) leader and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy.

Today is the last day for filing of nominations for the first phase of polls to be held on May 10.

Among the 85 candidates announced today, three candidates are contesting in the first phase, 54 candidates in the second phase and 28 candidates in the third phase.
