Avionics industry facing rapid changes: BEL CMD

Kochi, Apr 23 (UNI) Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) CMD V V R Sastry today stressed the need for standardisation in the avionics industry in the face of rapid changes in technology.

Delivering the keynote address at a one-day national seminar on ''Emerging Trends in Avionics Maintenance Philosphy'', organised by the Naval Aircraft Yard, Kochi, Mr Sastry said the avionics industry was influenced by rapid changes in the electronics components, hardware as well as software, and trends in high volume industries like computers and telecommunications.

''The need for standardisation and the support from components and commercial-off-the-shelf manufacturers needs no emphasis'', he said.

Mr Sastry also said that the maintenance philosophy in the avionics industry needed to be prepared to synchonize with the ''go green'' philosophy, Inaugurating the seminar, Vice-Admiral Sunil Damle, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, spoke on the advances made in the field of avionics and stressed the challenges these posed to the maintainer in design and maintenance.

''As the avionics advance to the state-of-art, it is imperative that maintenance equipment, instruments and practices also keep pace with the advancement'', he said.

The maintaners had to display considerable ingenuity, innovativeness and possess the capability to grasp and master new skills, he added.

Seven papers were presented during the three sessions of the seminar including on repair of avionics assets, future of avionics testing, outsourcing repairs on aviation safety and trends in avionics maintenance.

Representatives from various PSUs and private sector companies besides the armed forces participated in the seminar.
