Steps to make Lingareddipalayan sugar mill to run in profit

Puducherry, Apr 22 (UNI) The Puducherry administration is taking steps to make the Lingareddipalayam Cooperative Sugar Mill, a profit making unit, Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the Legislative Assembly today.

Replying to a question, Mr Rangasamy said to make the loss running mill into a profit making unit, the administration had granted a licence for setting up a distillery inside the mill premises. However, it could not be implemented in view of the opposition from the workers and sugarcane suppliers.

He said wooden planks worth Rs 6 lakh had been purchased to replace the damaged platform.

PMK member Arul Murugan, who posed the question alleged that the mill was spending money by purchasing unnecessary items.

Taking exception to the remark, Mr Rangasamy said neither the member nor he was aware about the requirements of the mill. As only technically qualified persons know about it, the member should not make such remarks.

Stating that 40 per cent of the sugarcane was being supplied from Puducherry and 60 per cent from Tamil Nadu, Mr Rangasamy said he had no objection if farmers run the mill.
