All parties should respect polls: UN

{image-united nations_22042008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Kathmandu, Apr 22: The United Nations has said Nepal's political parties must respect the result of the country's multiparty elections held last week.

''Parties must respect the will of the people and the rule of law in the coming weeks as the results are being counted,'' the Security Council said in a statement in New York yesterday. The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has won 120 of the 240 directly elected seats in the 601-member Parliament. Maoists have not been able to get simple majority in the 601 seats of the Constituent Assembly.

The party has emerged as the largest party with over 30 per cent of the votes in the 335 seats of the proportional representation system followed by 21 per cent of the Nepali Congress and 20 per cent of the CPN, UML.
