New meningitis test to identify genetic predisposition
Sydney, Apr 20 (UNI) Australian doctors have developed a new test for meningococcal meningitis which will help diagnose people who may be genetically prone to the disease.
Victorian Health Minister Daniel Andrews said the new test will reduce the waiting time for results by two months.
''We estimate that around 200 Victorians will undergo these tests each year,'' he said.
''Having a better understanding of whether you are genetically predisposed to suffer meningitis or meningococcal means you can be vaccinated and receive the other treatment and care that you need,'' he added.
Doctors at the Royal Melbourne Hospital developed the test.
