Land sought for developing commercial harbour at Colachel

Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu, Apr 19 (UNI) A Central team has asked the Tamil Nadu Government to acquire the requisite land for developing a commercial harbour at Colachel in this district.

The team, led by Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project Chairman and Shipping Corporation Secretary A P V N Sarma, made an assessment of the Colachel beach area to explore the way and means for developing a commercial harbour, yesterday.

The team was accompanied by State Fisheries Deputy Director Krishnamurthy and Kanniyakumari District Collector Jothinirmala.

The proposal to develop the natural harbour at Colachel into a commercial one received a boost when the Malaysian Industrial Development Corporation made a study in 2000 and declared that the project was feasible.

If the project materialised, it would give a fillip to trade activities from the State to Europe and the Far East nations as it would immensely cut down on the sailing time owing to its proximity to the international waters.
