5000 workers lose job, jute mill closed for indefinite period

Hoogly, Apr 19 (UNI) About 5000 workers of Gandalpara jute mill at Chandannagore in the district went on a mass agitation after the mill management issued a notice of indefinite suspension of work.

The workers said the management had taken the decision without any discussions with them.

SDPO Kalyan Mukherjee told UNI here that the jute mill management was forced to issue the order following a week-long dispute with the workers.

The management had also suspended four workers a few days ago, he said.

The workers went on agitation after the afternoon-shift workers went to the mill on their usual time and found the main gate locked with a notice on it, he said.

Tension gripped the area as the protestors held huge demonstration in front of the mill. A contingent of police has been deployed in the area, he added.
