Fmr KHADC chief disqualified in Meghalaya

Shillong, Apr 18 (UNI) Former chief executive member of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Hispreaching Son Shylla has been disqualified as member of the Autonomous District Council, official sources said.

KHADC chairman Martamlin Pyrbot said the maverick Congress politician was disqualified as member of the Council as per the KHADC Prevention of Defection Act 2003 for defying the party's whip.

Mr Shylla had contested the recent Assembly elections from Nongkrem constituency as an Independent candidate despite Congress' nomination of Union Tribal Affairs Minister P R Kyndiah's scion Waibha Kyndiah as the official candidate.

Both the candidates lost the polls to United Democratic Party candidate Ardent M Basaiawmoit.

In a House of 30, the Congress (17) is leading the KHADC with the support of Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (2) and one lone Meghalaya Democratic Party member.

The United Democratic has eight members.
