Punjab: Youth commits suicide in police lock up

Ludhiana, Apr 17: A 27-year-old youth, who was detained by the police yesterday, allegedly committed suicide in police lock up at the Focal Point police station here last night, police today claimed.

The detainee, Amish Kumar was arrested on charges of stealing a motorcycle of a factory colleague in the Moti Nagar area. The police claimed to have recovered the motorcycle from him.

The police claimed that the detainee, who belonged to Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, used his shirt to hang himself from a ventilator window inside the cell in the police station.

SP (city) Gurmit Singh after an initial inquiry suspended ASI Rajinder Singh and head constable Ravinderpal Singh, both of whom were on duty in the night. A case was also registered at the police station.
