Agitation turns violent, three injured

Puducherry, Apr 17 (UNI) As many as three police personnel and an employee of the Civil Supplies Department were injured when an agitation, organised by the Communist Party of India (CPI), turned violent here today.

The CPI had called for a picketing in seven places to protest against the price rise and urging the government to take immediate steps to curb it.

While picketing the Civil Supplies Departrment and the Excise Department, the party volunteers turned violent and began pelting stones.

In this incident, a Head Constable, a Constable, an Excise Sub-Inspector and a clerk in the Civil Supplies Department, were injured.

They also barged into the Civil Supplies Department and ransacked it, causing damages to furniture.

Over 985 party volunteers, including Legislators R Viswanathan and Na Ra Kalainathan, were arrested.
