45 Tibetans detained for protesting outside Chinese Consulate
Mumbai, Apr 17 (UNI) About 45 Tibetans were detained today outside the Chinese Consulate in the crowded Nariman point area of south Mumbai when they were protesting the Olympic Torch run in Delhi.
The protesters were shouting slogans and holding banners, condemning the high-handed approach of the Chinese government against Tibetans.
According to sources in Cuffe Parade police station, heavy police vigil was maintained to avoid any untoward incident in the area and the protesters were taken into custody immediately.
The protesters first assembled outside the Consulate at 1030 hrs and again a group of six Tibetans came there at 1530 hrs, but they were immediately detained for gathering unlawfully. The assembly of five or more persons was banned in the area as the Maharashtra Assembly session is in progress. Besides this, a rally or any other type of protest within south Mumbai is banned as per orders of the Bombay High court.
