Govt to take steps to revive handicrafts
New Delhi, Apr 16 (UNI) About one lakh weavers would benefit from the setting up of two mega handloom clusters in Varanasi as part of steps to prevent the workers from leaving their profession and working as daily wage workers, Minister of State for Textiles EVS Elangovan today said.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, he said no instance of handicrafts that had vanished due to lack of interest by craftspersons because of poor returns had been brought to the notice of the government.
However, it was proposed to commission a diagnostic study through a professional body to identify crafts languishing and prevent them from vanishing.
