Pakistani government to restore deposed judges: Gillani
Islamabad, Apr 15 (UNI) Pakistan wants to restore deposed judges of superior judiciary, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani has said.
''The government not only wants to restore the deposed judges but also wants an independent judicial system where the judges act freely in accordance with the Constitution and the law of the land,'' the Prime Minister said late last night during a meeting with the members of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) delegation.
The judges were deposed after they refused to take fresh oath of allegiance following imposition of emergency in the country on November 3, 2007.
The Prime Minister said immediate action to free the judges reflected government's intentions.
''We believe that the Parliament is the supreme body and all important issues should be solved through it adding that a Parliamentary Committee will give recommendations on judges' issue and the issue will be solved in the best possible way,'' he added.
Despite the fact that the February 18 elections resulted in a split mandate, it was heartening to observe that democratic and moderate forces had succeeded in achieving substantial majority, he said.
This trend led to the formulation of coalition governments at the federal and provincial level, which truly reflected unity through diversity, he added.
