WB: Mother feared drowned in Ganges

Barrackpore, Apr 14: Taking a dip in the Ganges on Bengali New Year's Day should be a good experience.

But, it was not so good for 35-year-old Bhabani Kundu from Sundia village, who is feared to have drowned at Dhabdhebi Ghat under Jagaddal police station in North 24 Parganas today.

Police said that the victim, wife of a shop-keeper of Sundia village, went to Dhabdhebi Ghat along with her 13-year-old daughter Tina.

But later, the girl reportedly said that she could not find her mother, who had gone to take a dip in the river, leaving her on the steps of the ghat and not retunred. When she alerted the people at the ghat, a search was undertaken. However, Bhabani was nowhere to be found.

Police suspect that she must have slipped and fallen, and hit her head on the steps under the water that knocked her unconscious.

However, her body was yet to be recovered.

A team of divers are presently conducting a search operation, police added.
