Malaysian Indian Congress leader calls for end to ban of Indian priests
Kuala Lumpur, Apr.14 : Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) president S. Samy Vellu has appealed to the Malaysian Government to lift the ban on the recruitment of priests from India for Hindu temples and Sikh gurdwaras.
According to a Tamil Nesan report, Vellu met Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar and requested him to raise the issue in the Cabinet, and demanded its revocation.
He said the temples and gurdwaras urgently needed about 500 and 300 priests respectively.
In a statement, the Daily Star quoted Vellu as saying that the Government should take into consideration the sensitivities involved, as priests were needed to conduct daily prayers.
