London, Apr 13 : Brit super-richies, celebrities are being put at security risk because their bodyguards are 'too fat'.

British heavies - employed to protect royalty, stars and mega-rich businessmen - were considered among the best in the world.

But according to experts standards have plummeted since a Government quango was introduced.

In order to work as a bodyguard - officially known as a close protection officer -a person needs to have a licence from the Security Industry Authority.

But anyone who passes a written exam gets a licence - even if they are overweight, elderly or even disabled.

"Anybody can pass. You don't have to be fit or have self-defence training," The Daily Express quoted Robin Barratt, founder of the British Bodyguard Association, as saying.

"There are overweight people weighing 20-plus stone with SIA licences because they can sit down and pass an exam.

"One of the guys who passed the course couldn't walk up the stairs to the exam room without puffing and panting. It's frightening," he added.
