Major fire near Howrah Bridge
Kolkata, Apr 11 (UNI) A major fire broke out tonight at a flower market, adjacent to Howrah bridge, on the eastern banks of Hoogly river, police said.
Half a dozen fire fighters arrived at the Jagannath Ghat market, also close to Mallick Ghat pumping station, to douse the flames.
Traffic on the Strand Road and Howrah bridge was disrputed as firefighters and local police cordoned off all entry points in the area.
There had been no report of any casualty so far.
According to reports, many shops were destroyed in the flames.
Police Commissioner Gautam Chakraborty said enforcement was deployed to avert any untoward incident.
Additionl fire engines from different stations were summoned to fight the razing fire.
The fire was also fuelled by gusty winds from riverside.
In another fire, a coconut oil godown was destroyed at Beleghata road this evening.
Four fire engines were pressed into service to douse the flames.
The godown was on the ground floor of a four-storied residential building.
