Sukhbir Singh appointed Member (Electrical), Railway Board

New Delhi, Apr 10 (UNI) Mr Sukhbir Singh has taken over as the Member (Electrical), Railway Board, New Delhi and ex-officio Secretary to the Government of India.

Prior to his new assignment, he was General Manager, North Eastern Railway.

Born in 1949, Mr Singh, who assumed the charge of current post on April 8, is a gold medalist in Bachelor in Engineering (electrical) from University of Roorkee (now IIT, Roorkee).

An officer of the 1971 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineering (IRSEE), he worked in various capacities, including General Manager, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works; Chief Electrical Engineer, -Western Railway; Divisional Railway Manager, Allahabad; Chief Electrical Engineer (Loco), Central Railway; and Chief Electrical Engineer (Suburban service, Projects), Western Railway, Mumbai.

He also served a stint as Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Central Railway, Nagpur and Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai.

Mr Singh was awarded Electrical Shield, 2006 for best performance of the electrical assets of Western Railway.

During his tenure as General Manager, North Eastern Railway, two world records were set up: completion of 108-metre-long Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Chhapra (Bihar) within two months and innovative single block method for execution of a major traffic facility p, also at Chhapra.

He underwent a course in Strategic Management at the University of Manchester, UK and also attended the Advance Leadership Programme at Stern Business School, New York.
