Tribal district gets ISO certification for governance in Assam
By Peter Alex Todd
Diphu (Assam), Apr 9 : The autonomous District of Karbi Anglong in Assam became the first tribal District to earn International Organisation of Standardization (ISO) certification in governance and welfare-oriented administration.
Karbi Anglong despite facing a surge in militancy became the fourth district in the country to get the ISO 9001-2000 Certification, the other three districts being Krishna in Andhra Pradesh, Latur and Jalgaon in Maharashtra.
The District Council Office received the certificate from Det Norske Veritas (DNV), which is one of the leading global providers of accredited management system certification.
The international certification has encouraged the council to work in direction of healthy management practices.
"We have laid down the processes and we have ensure and documented them. We have a documented system for every process starting from the issue of gas certificate to processing of license for various purposes of the entire treasury operations such as appointments, transfers, and postings. There is documented procedure for everything," said P K Gogoi, Sub-division officer.
With the issue of ISO certificates, official duties are being made mandatory that includes departments to deliver quality service at the right time to the public. Therefore, people coming to the office for any work gets instant service without any delay, which is often a noticed problem with Governmental organisation.
"We started this ISO program, which is called total quality management in the district administration. This process has started for the first time in the entire northeast. With the certificate, people can say that this is their office. We have to increase their effective interface between citizens and employees," said M Angamuthu, DC, Karbi Anglong District.
Moreover, office outlook has been renovated, and the nameplates of the departments are neatly hung.
Public accessibility cell, a video conference hall (satellite shot), internet connectivity, computer training centre, parking stands, ATM and many more are being set up to ensure effective service to the public.
