Mah: Clashes between Sai devotees-villagers

Nashik, Apr 8: Residents of Khambale village near Ghoti in Igatpuri taluka of the district held 'Rasta Roko' agitation on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway No 3 following clashes between them and some Sai devotees.

According to sources, some Sai devotees from Dadar were on their way to Shirdi, carrying a palanquin of Sai Baba yesterday. Following a dash by an auto-rickshaw near Khambale village in Igatpuri taluka of the district, they started beating the auto-rickshaw driver. When the villagers tried to solve the matter, the group of the 20-25 Sai devotees beat the villagers also with iron rods and stones.

Seven people including some women, were injured in the incident.

After the incident, the Sai devotees fled from the spot.

Angry over this, the villagers staged a 'Rasta Roko' agitation on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway No 3 for nearly 75 minutes last evening which caused problem for the traffic on the highway.

After intervention by the police, the agitation was withdrawn and traffic on the highway regained normalcy. The injured have been admitted to rural hospital at Ghoti.
