Traffic congestion resolution only when people use public trpt:Haroo

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf today said the problem of traffic congestion and limited road space in the capital could be solved only if people in the city started using public transport extensively rather than depending on private vehicles.

Speaking at the inauguration of a new zonal transport office in Wazirpur (North-West), Mr Yousuf said the government on its part was committed to providing safe, modern and pollution free public transport system.

Speaking at the function, where outer Delhi MP Sajjan Kumar, local MLA Anil Bhardwaj and Spl Commissioner (Transport) were present, the Transport Minister said the Transport Department has, in the recent past, taken several initiatives to achieve a truly service oriented approach in its functioning by enhancing efficiency, improving transparency and by increasing accountability.

Mr Yusuf said that the capital had more than 45 lakh vehicles running on its road and about 1 lakh vehicles from neighbouring states entered the capital everyday and also 650 new vehicles registered every day in Delhi.

He said the Zonal Transport Office is the most prominent public interface of the Transport Department. So far, 10 such zonal offices were fully functioning and three more zonal offices like South District (Sukhdev Vihar), Central District (Sarai Kale Khan) and South West District (Vasant Vihar) are shortly to be opened.

After the above three zonal offices begin functioning, the total number of Zonal Transport Offices would reach to 13.
