Kolkata, Apr 4 (UNI) At least two persons died and three others are in serious condition after lightning struck them in the Nakashipara area of Nadia district late last night.
Police said five persons were seriously injured late last night, when lightning struck the area. They were taken to the local hospital, where one died at midnight last night and another died early today. The others are still in the hospital.
Nadia Agriculture department officials feared there will be heavy losses to crops, especially mangoes in the district, where its best species are cultivated.
Meanwhile, the entire state experienced spells of heavy rainfall and stormy weather accompanied by lightning, especially in the city as well as Bankura, Purulia and West Midnapore districts.
Indian Meteorological Department officials said that rain and spells of thunderstorms will continue for at least the next two days.
Although trains were not cancelled, railway services were delayed due to heavy rainfall.
The city witnessed heavy downpour early this morning with at least 25.3 mm rainfall being recorded in the last 24 hours.
Public transport stayed off the roads early in the morning.
However, they began to ply as the day progressed. Traffic was slow and people faced difficulty in reaching their destinations.
