SC stays order on parking construction at Siri Fort

New Delhi, Apr 4 (UNI) The Supreme Court today stayed till further order the construction of underground parking at Siri Fort complex here in view of 2010 Commonwealth Games.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices Arijit Pasayat and S H Kapadia also directed the authorities to suggest alternative site for construction of the parking lot.

The construction of the parking lot was opposed on the grounds that the government was destroying greenary in area in the name of Commonwealth Games.

The apex court was also told that these green areas are the lungs of the city and can not be allowed to be destroyed under any circumstances.

According to the petitioners the authorities have not even obtained requisite clearances.

The Supreme Court had already directed that no construction shall be carried out in any forest or reserved area without its prior permission.
