Rahul to flag off cycle rally in TN dist on July 15

Tiruchirapalli, Apr 4 (UNI) All India Congress Youth Wing General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, MP, will flag off a cycle rally by the Tamil Nadu unit of the Congress Sevadal in Virudhunagar to highlight the programmes of the UPA government at the Centre on July 15, the birthday of former Chief Minister K Kamaraj.

Addressing a press conference here, Congress Sevadal state chief organiser Kovai K Selvaraj said the the party had selected Virudhunagar to flag off the rally as it was the birth place of Congress stalwart Kamaraj.

Mr Rahul Gandhi himself would undertake a state-wide tour from April 7 to highlight the Centre's achievements, especially the Rs 60,000 crore farm loans and the Rs 28,000 crore allocation for Women Self-Help Groups.

The rally, passing through all the important places in the state, would culminate at the Kamaraj Memorial at Chennai on August 9 after covering about 800 km.

He said during the rally, the Sevadal volunteers would explain the Centre's schemes to the people through pamphlets.

Mr Selvaraj said the Sevadal would launch an aggressive membership campaign in which 500 volunteers would be deputed throughout the state to rope in ten people each to its cadre, he added.

About 300 Sevadal volunteers would provide security to Congress President Sonia Gandhi on her visit to Karaikudi tomorrow.
