Seven arrested in connection with madrasa violence

Barasat, Apr 3 (UNI) Police today arrested seven people in connection with the torching of a room in a madrasa at Noapara under Barasat police station in North 24 Parganas yesterday.

Police said an irate mob set a few books and an almirah in the madrasa afire yesterday and the police forces had to fire in the air to control the mob.

Meanwhile, a 12-hour bandh, called by the Indian Union of Muslim League and endorsed by the Trinamool Congress, had little impact, barring some road blockades on the state and national highways near the district town in North 24 Parganas, official sources at the district headquarters said.

Some persons of the minority community blocked the Barrackpore-Barasat road for more than four hours at Arifbari under Barasat police station.

Another blockade was raised at Bankra on National Highway 35 and Jessore road near Madhyamgram and at Kadambagachhi on Taki road under Barasat police station.

Besides, some miscreants indulged vandalism at Chhotjagulia under Barasat police station and ransacked the office of the Joint Block Development Officer attached to the local Panchayat office.

Police later rushed to the Panchayat office and controlled the situation.

Meanwhile, Rajaya Sabha member and editor of an Urdu daily Mr Maliawadi held a meeting with North 24 Parganas District Magistrate Prabhat Misra at the district headquarters to take stock of the situation.
