VPT handles highest cargo of 64.6 million tonnes

Visakhapatnam, Apr 2 (UNI) The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has handled a record 64.60 million tonnes of cargo in the current fiscal, surpassing the previous record of 56.39 million tonnes handled in the year 2006-07.

The incremental traffic of 8.21 million tonnes, an increase of 14.55 per cent, was the highest ever in the history of the port surpassing the previous best incremental traffic, a VPT release said here today.

The port had been declared winner of greentech excellence 'Gold Award-2007' in service sector for outstanding achievement in environmental management, it said.

The LPG cavern facility with a capacity to store 60,000 tonnes, the first of its kind in South Asia, was put into operation in November 2007, the release said.

It had also been notified as International Transhipment Terminal by the customs department last year, it added.
