Punjab Congress delegation meets PM on Sarabjit issue

New delhi, Apr 2 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today assured that the government would take all possible steps to secure the release of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian citizen facing death in Pakistan in connection with a serial bomb blasts case of 20 years back.

The assurance was given to a delegation of Congress leaders from Punjab who met him here mainly to seek his continued intervention to save the Indian from the gallows.

AICC, spokesman Manish Tewari, who was also a member of the delegation, said all the members prominently raised the Sarabjit issue.

They also brought to the attention of the Prime Minister a resolution passed unanimously by the Punjab Assembly seeking his release from Pakistani prison on "humanitarian grounds." Sarabjit has sought mercy from the Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf after his death sentence was confirmed by Supreme Court.

The President had rejected his plea. The Pakistani government, however, stayed his death sentence till April 30 in the wake of an appeal by the Indian government.
