Fresh warrant against Abu Salem in extortion case

New Delhi, Apr 2 (UNI) Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjeev Jain today issued fresh production warrant against underworld don Abu Salem in connection with criminal intimidation and extortion from a Delhi-based businessman.

The court asked Jail Superintendent, Arthur Road Jail, Mumbai, to produce Salem before the court on May 20.

The court also issued a showcause notice to the jail superintendent for not producing Salem before the court on several occasions.

Salem is facing trial before the Delhi Court in connection with a six-year-old extortion case in which he and his associate had demanded a sum of Rs 1 crore from South Delhi-based businessman Rajat Nagrath.

The gangster had tried extorting the amount from Nagrath, who owned a firm Allied Communications in East of Kailash, in July 2002, via the former's henchman.

Salem's remand was extended to 13 days in connection with the said case.

Salem was lodged in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail after he was arrested in India, following his extradition from Portugal in November 2005 for his alleged role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts and several other cases.
