Bengal Panchayat elections begins on May 11, poll in three phases

Kolkata, Apr 2 (UNI) The Panchayat elections in West Bengal would begin on May 11 and the poll process would be completed in three phases, Home Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty said today.

Mr Chakraborty told mediapersons at the state Secretariat that the elections would be held on May 11,14 and 18.

He said the last date for withdrawal of nominations is April 16.

''The government is committed to making the three-tier Panchayat poll in the state a success and has taken all adequate arrangements,'' Mr Chakraborty observed.

He informed that a high-level meeting had been convened at the Writers' Buildings on April 7 to oversee the poll preparations adding 100 companies of Central forces were sought to help make the elections free and fair.
