UP govt's move against Tikait nefarious: Gujjar

New Delhi, Apr 1 (UNI) Terming the Uttar Pradesh government's move to arrest BKU leader Mahendra Singh Tikait ''an act of terrorism,'' national president of Dehat Morcha Kesari Singh Gujjar urged the Centre to intervene immediately before the situation went out of control.

He said the SC/ST Atrocities Act under which charges have been slapped against the farmer's leader was ''bad legislation'' and was being misused by vested interests with an aim to victimise innocent and harmless people.

Pointing to the ''discriminatory provisions'' in the Act, he said,''If Ms Mayawati uttered the same words those were interpreted as words of pride. But if anyone else did, then he is put behind bars.'' The UP police were trying to arrest the farmers' leader for allegedly making some casteist remarks at Chief Minister Mayawati.

Mr Gujjar said the UP government's action of ''terrorising'' the people of Sisauli by encircling the village by paramilitary forces without any valid cause, was reprehensible and nefarious which said it amounted to illegal detention of residents.
