Manipur: Bandh to oppose airport expansion

Imphal, Apr 1: Life was disrupted today in the Naoriya Pakhanglakpa constituency near the Imphal Airport following a 13-hour strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) to protest the acquisition of land for the airport's expansion and extension.

The Manipur government has decided to acquire additional land for expansion of the Tulihal Airport.

However, the JAC alleged that the move will affect the people of the area, especially Malom, Ningombam, Meitram, Kodompokpi and Mongshangei/Konjeng Leikai villages.

The bandh also affected the movement of vehicles around the airport and the Imphal Churachandpur road - a state highway.

However, airport officials said the air traffic functioned normally.

Meanwhile, the airport was sealed by security personnel and entry of visitors inside the airport complex was also stopped as a precautionary measure.
