Youth sentenced to life under Prevention of Atrocities Act

Akola, Mar 29 (UNI) A local court here sentenced a 25-year-old youth to life imprisonment, under the Scheduled Caste Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, for committing atrocities on an 11-month-old infant tribal girl.

Additional sessions judge Shalini B Gaikwad handed down the sentence yesterday to S K Badru (25), a resident of Murtizapur tehsil town in Akola district and also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.

The judge also sentenced the accused to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and has directed him to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 under section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, holding him guilty of having had unnatural intercourse with the child. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The judge has further directed the youth to pay a fine of Rs 3,000 to the child's mother.

Badru committed the crime on the night of March 17, 2006 in Lakadganj area of Murtizapur. Six witnesses were examined in the case.
