Official stresses need for mechanisation of farming
Puducherry, Mar 29 (UNI) S Kannaiyan, Chairman, National Bio-diversity Authority and Chairman of the expert committee team, constituted by the Tamil Nadu Government today stressed the need for mechanisation of sugarcane farming.
Talking to newspersons here, after a committee meeting on developing mechanism for effective technology transfer and application for the benefit of farming community in Tamil Nadu, he said mechanisation of sugarcane farming was needed for its development and also for sugar sectors.
Considering the labour shortage and an increase in the cost for harvesting cane, the need of the hour was for the introduction of paddy harvester, he added.
Professor Kannaiyan said steps were needed for an increase in productivity of cane with higher recovery percentage of sugar. The Committee had discussed about the implementation of the latest technology in farming for earning profits, he added.
He said the Committee, considering the importance of water-saving and water-conservation in sugarcane production, had urged to bring areas under micro irrigation system.
