Villagers beat up woman for practicing witchcraft

Patna, Mar 28 (UNI) In yet another shocking incident in Bihar, a woman was mercilessly beaten up and tonsured by villagers on charges of practicing withcraft at Gumaria in Patna district yesterday.

Police today said the villagers alleged that Sunita Devi(50) practised withcraft in the village and brought misery to some families. The enraged villagers tied her to an electric post and mercilessly beat her despite her pleas for innocence.

Not satisfied with the physical assault, which continued for more than 30 minutes, some other villagers came up and tonsured her.

Meanwhile, some television cameramen and journalists instead of protesting the brutality, preferred to take live pictures of the shocking incident to prove their professionalism.

However, police rushed to the spot and arrested some of the villagers.

Incidentally, despite all efforts by the Nitish Kumar government to establish a rule of law across the state, such maccabre incidents continue to take place in rural and urban Bihar with more and more people preferring to take law into their own hands.
