Romesh Sharma convicted for not paying Income tax
New Delhi, Mar 28 (UNI) A local court today convicted alleged Dawood Ibrahim associate Romesh Sharma for not paying over Rs two crore due as Income tax in the end 1980s.
The Income Tax department had filed a complaint before the court in May 1996 alleging that Mr Sharma had not paid income tax of Rs 21,48,000 during the year 1987-88, a sum of Rs 2,7400000 for the period 1988-89, and a sum of Rs 25,64000 for the period 1989-90.
Earlier, a charge was framed against Mr Sharma under section 276 (C) (2) of Income Tax Act on which he had pleaded not guilty.
Later in the year 1998, a raid was conducted in Sharma's house and Rs 10 lakh cash, 15 cars and jewellery worth Rs 12 lakhs and a helicopter were recovered.
The court would pronounce the quantum of sentence on Monday.
