District court sentences 3 to life imprisonment

Barasat, Mar 28 (UNI) A local court in North 24 Parganas today sentenced three people to life imprisonment for killing a youth of Kamarthuba under Habra police station in 1998.

Additional District and Session Judge Samaresh Prasad Chowdhury passed the verdict sentencing Babul Deb and his two associates--Sambhu Sil and Suresh Modak, and also imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on each of them. Default of payment would invite an additional imprisonment of one year.

The trio was pronounced guilty by the judge yesterday.

The 1998 murder case was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation on the basis of a Calcutta High Court order following a public interest litigation case. About a thousand petitioners sought a CBI inquiry into the murder.
