Ian McKellen fears he won't land 'Hobbit' role

Washington, Mar 27 : 'Lord of the Rings' star Sir Ian McKellen has not yet been approached to reprise his role as Gandalf in the prequel.

The 68-year-old actor fears that he may not be signed for the film.

"Encouragingly, (Lord of the Rings director) Peter (Jackson) and (producer) Fran Walsh have told me they couldn't imagine The Hobbit without their original Gandalf," Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

"Their confidence hasn't yet been confirmed by the director (Guillermo Del Toro), but I am keeping my diary free!" he added.

The film is due to go into production next year (09).
