Sarkozy conferred honorary knighthood

London, Mar 27: Visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy was awarded an honorary title by British Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh. Mr Sarkozy was made an Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, a title that has been bestowed on other world leaders also. The Queen also gave him proofs of the 2004 stamp issue celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale agreement between France and Britain.

The President was an avid stamp collector in his youth. She also gave him silver framed photographs of herself and the Duke. Mr Sarkozy's wife Carla Bruni received a miniature carriage clock in a leather case. The President gave the Queen a Lalique crystal sculpture of two horses and a 1743 book by Jean de Sanier, general inspector of Louis XV, called The Perfect Knowledge of Horses. The Duke received a bronze statue of a hunting dog.

Mr Sarkozy is on a two-day state visit to Britain.
