Illegal felling of trees rampant in Guwahati

Guwahati, March 22, 2008 : The Amchang Sanctuary on the outskirts of northeastern Guwahati is fast losing its verdant foliage due to the illegal felling of trees as villagers from the Garo community have set up charcoal production units inside the forests.

They have set up units inside the forest and chop trees for burning the wood and making charcoal. Locals maintain that forest officials have been intimated about this but lament that no action has been taken so far.
