Bhutan gears up for first-ever parliamentary polls

Bhutan, March 22, 2008 : Bhutan is carrying out final preparations for the country's first parliamentary elections that is to be held on March 24.

With some voters living in rural areas which are inaccessible by vehicles, logistics is one of the largest obstacles for the democratic exercise to take place in the Himalayan kingdom. Approximately 318,000 people are registered to vote out of a population of 646,851 with many of them living in rural areas.
