Villagers stage demo before Land Registration office

Kancheepuram, Mar 24 (UNI) Tension prevailed as villagers staged a demonstration in front of the Land Registration office here today protesting against acquiring land for setting up Special Economic Zone(SEZ) at Cheyyar near here.

The affected villagers, especially farmers, including women led by 'Azhinjalpattu' Village Panchayat leader Ravichandran, staged the stir against the government's decision to take away their lands for SEZ, police sources said.

The protesters said they would intensify the agitation, if the state government failed to drop the move to acquire lands for SEZ.

Sources said 700 acre of land had earlier been acquired for establishing the SIPCOT Industrial Park at Mangal village near here.

The state government had also recently announced that it would acquire another 2300 acre of land for SEZ at Cheyyar.

A notice was also issued in this regard earlier that people residing in villages adjoining Cheyyar should not purchase, sell or register the lands, police said.
